The New High Speed Rail System in California a preview of Obama's NEW DEAL...
FAILURE With the economy in recession, California’s plan to
ask the federal government for billions of dollars to help build the
nation’s first high-speed rail system might seem like wishful thinking
rather than a feasible financial strategy. But transportation
officials say that California’s high-speed rail project seems to be on a
fast track to a hefty federal contribution - perhaps as much as $15 billion
to $20 billion. That optimism in the face of a dire economic outlook is the product of the priorities of President-elect Barack Obama’s administration; the likelihood of a big federal infrastructure investment; growing concern over climate change; the volatility of gas prices; Californians’ backing of the $10 billion high-speed rail bond measure and strong support for the project from the state’s potent congressional delegation, including Sen. Dianne Feinstein and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. “It seems like the stars are aligned,” said Rod Diridon of San Jose, a member of the High Speed Rail Authority. Building the San Francisco-to-Los Angeles and Anaheim line that will be the spine of the system will cost between $32.8 billion and $33.6 billion, according to the High Speed Rail Authority’s business report. Extensions built later would cost another $12 billion. In addition to the $10 billion from state bond sales, the authority is counting on $12 billion to $16 billion in federal funds plus $6.5 billion to $7.5 billion in private investment and $2 billion to $3 billion in local contributions. />http://michellemalkin.com/2008/12/26/high-speed-rail-to-nowhere/
More like a step in the right direction, mate.
Good, Now I want one going from New York to Boston.
It sounds good but makes no economic sense.
Welcome to government by proposition.
even more amazing as the state of California is about to be
broke and
is laying workers off, they are implementing draconian environmental
rules to drive businesses out of the state, and cause the economy
there to tank even more!
No
You are wrong. Europe and Japan has had High speed rail for years. The
New England states and NYC have rail for a hundred years. Most people in
Manhattan don't even own a car because public transportation is easier.
Any questions?
Well, I don't see anywhere in the Constitution that says I can
be taxed to fund another states projects.
Yep. And I am glad he is behind it. I am behind it. It will be
a good thing for the state and eventually for the country. If we want to
worry about where money is going, maybe we should ask the CURRENT
administration where all the bailout $ is have gone?
I love the idea of having high speed rail here.
It was never Obama is plan.
It is California is plan.
Don't worry. The auto industry will pay the state of California
to take out the rail just like they did to the street car in the
early-1900's.
We bail out the auto industry, they jack up public transportation.
Oh well, that is America. http://richmond.com/science-technology/25463
The only failure I see is that we are, what, 30,40 years behind
Europe and Japan on rail systems when ours was once the best in the world.
This may surprise republicans but people actually like trains.
